MASSIMILIANO CAMBULI
Solidere

Before the 2020’s dramatic explosion that literally wiped it out, Beirut’s seafront was the very symbol of Lebanon’s 3rd world position in inequality ranking.
Part of this area had been deeply reshaped by Solidere, the public-private partnership company listed on the stock exchange, which turned Beirut into a Monaco-styled new city.
Old houses were pulled down and traditional economic activities were removed, yet the former dwellers didn't abandon the seafront.
Just next to luxury buildings and recreation resorts for economic elites and wealthy expatriates, in the remaining free access areas lower class people kept spending their time and life for leisure, religious offices, and to get one’s living from fishing.
Beside them, protests and resistance to Solidere’s real estate plan became a visual testimony of the city transformation.
